Act 1
EXT. MONTAGE OF A DRAB AND RUNDOWN LOOKING CAMPSITE
First shot of the campsite is a shot of the caravan in which the family will be staying, the sound of wind, birds and distant chatting in the background. Then it will cut to a close up of a fly buzzing around a window, the sound from the surroundings will continue also. Then it will cut to a wide shot of the whole campsite, the sea in the background. It will be a dreary and overcast day, generally boring and dead seeming. Finally, it will cut to shots of the children, seemingly asleep in the caravan, breathing heavily.
INT. FLASHBACK TO PRESENT DAY, IN THE KITCHEN OF THE FAMILY
The audience is instantly hit with the sound of shouting as the parents are mid argument, seemingly over nothing important. The camera cuts to extreme close ups of the parent’s faces showing them arguing and how unattractive it is. The camera then cuts to the children who look unfazed and simply bored. During the shot of the boy the sound of the arguing will become muffled as if he subconsciously blocks it out whereas when there is a shot of the girl, it will become more exaggerated. This loud and quiet will go backwards and forwards until the next scene.
INT. SPLIT SCREEN OF THE CHILDRENS BEDROOMS
In this scene there will be a split screen, on one half will be the dad going into the daughter’s room and the other half will be the mother going into the son’s room. The parents will both say the same thing at the same time to the children, posing them the idea of going on a family weekend away. The children’s individual responses will be back to full screen close ups of their faces to show their unamused reactions that completely lack enthusiasm. This scene will be very quiet again, contrasting with the loud shouting of the last scene.
EXT. OUTSIDE OF THEIR HOUSE
Just a shot of the outside of their house, all the lights turning off so its completely dark
Act 2
EXT. OUTSIDE OF MOVING CAR
A shot of the wheels of a car diving along the road before cutting to a view of the other side of the road, cars whizzing past in the opposite direction. All the time the sound of radio ads in the background. Generally just lots of cinematic shots of the reflections on the car windows etc.
INT. INSIDE OF CAR
Shot from the boy’s side of car looking at the girl who is just looking out of the window with headphones in. The boy reaches out and yanks the headphone out of her ear causing her to react very loudly and aggressively, the scene cutting mid way through her outburst.
INT. INSIDE THE CARAVAN
The family get into the caravan and are generally unimpressed, they go round checking the utilities and discover that the oven and the shower don’t work. The dad makes some sort of sarcastic comment about the state of the caravan, and decides to go out for the rest of the day and only come back to go to sleep. The children don’t want to go out because they have spent enough time with their parents and ask if they can stay behind. The mother is reluctant but eventually agrees as the father persuades her it will be fine. The mother leaves some food for the children for when they get hungry and they then leave.
EXT. BUS STOP, BAD WEATHER COMING
There is a shot of the parents waiting at the bus stop in a long queue, looking miserable. There is then a shot from the other side of the road, the bus pulls up and they get onto the bus. Next there is a shot of the ad on the back of the bus (something mildly amusing) and the bus pulls away and drives into the distance.
EXT. SHOT OF THE OUTSIDE OF THE CARAVAN
At first there is shot of the caravan from quite a distance. You can’t hear anything only the wind and birds. Then the shot cuts in closer and you can see someone running past the window of the caravan (on the inside). The camera then cuts in closer again and you see the figure running back the other way. You can now make out that it is the girl. The camera then cuts to the inside of the caravan where we see the daughter running backwards and forwards in an attempt to rock the caravan, the boy just sitting on the sofa trying to watch something on his phone. He gets increasingly more angry until he starts shouting at his sister, at which point the camera cuts to the next scene.
EXT. OUTSIDE A CAFÉ IN THE SUN
Cuts to the parents sat at a café having a big meal and chatting idly about meaningless things like football and people at work etc. They seem happy but in a temporary way. They then start talking about the children, things which are ironic because it describes them.
INT. BACK INSIDE CARAVAN WITH THE CHILDREN – THEY HAVE UNPACKED AND MADE MESS
The children seem to be having a good time but now they are just sat on the sofa playing on their various devices, generally zoned out.
Act 3
EXT. CUTS BACK TO THE PARENTS SAT AT CAFÉ
There is a closer two shot of the parents sat outside a café but this time a waiter comes over and accidentally knocks a pint of beer all over the dad who instantly stands up and starts shouting at the waiter who is very apologetic and seemingly quite scared.
INT. DINGY CARAVAN
Now there is a close up shot of the stove and the sound of gas coming out of it. Then the camera cuts to a shot of the children who are both sat down with headphones, staring into their phones.
EXT. HIGHSTREET TYPE SETTING
Both of the parents are hurrying along, the father in front with a large stain on his trousers the mother jogging along weaving in and out of people to try and catch up. The camera is tracking them along the street with passers by walking between them and the camera. There is then a shot of them from a high angle that pans with them as they walk. There is then a jump cut to them stood at the bus stop and coming to the realisation that they have missed the last bus to the campsite and they will have to walk. You see the dad clench his fists and the scene cuts to a wide shot of them walking through a field, the dad in front and the mother not far behind.
INT. DINGY CARAVAN
This scene is a repetition of the scene at the beginning, the children lying down, seemingly asleep, breathing heavily. The camera then cuts to the oven again but closer than the last time, the camera almost inside it. The sound of gas is louder now. The camera then cuts back to the children’s faces.
EXT. COUNTRY LANE
The parents are now walking along a country lane towards the camera, it cutting and them getting closer with each cut. There is then a shot of the campsite sign showing the audience that they are near.
INT. CARAVAN
Now there is a shot from the inside of a caravan looking out of the window and you can see the parents coming around the corner and back towards it. The camera then cuts to a shot of one of the children’s hands dangling off the sofa.
EXT. OUTSIDE THE CARAVAN
The parents get closer to the caravan and say that they can smell gas. The dad runs up to the door and throws it open, the smell of gas hitting him, his face in shock.
INT. INSIDE CARAVAN
Fly on the wall shot of the dad running in and grabbing the children and carrying them outside.
EXT. OUTSIDE CARAVAN
The dad lays down the children down on the floor in panic. They check them over and discover that they are well and breathing. They ring the ambulance and the children start to stir.
